It is advisable to obtain your Tanzanian visa from this Consulate before your departure. A visa can be granted upon arrival in Tanzania if there is no access to a Tanzanian Embassy or Consulate in your country. All travellers to Tanzania and Travel Agents (on behalf of their clients) may apply directly to us for their Tanzanian visa.

To ensure an efficient visa application process please follow the listed application guidelines.

Currently, besides Tanzanian citizens, passport holders of the following countries do not need an entry visa for travel to Tanzania:

  • Nationals of the East African Community (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, the United Republic of Tanzania, and the Republic of Uganda)
  • Commonwealth countries (excluding Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, India, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, South Africa and United Kingdom)
  • Botswana
  • Gambia
  • Ghana
  • Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region of China)
  • Lesotho
  • Macao
  • Malawi
  • Namibia
  • Swaziland
  • Zambia
  • Zimbabwe

Nationals of all other countries not listed here require a visa to travel to Tanzania. Please check below whether or not you require a “Referred Visa” or a normal Entry Visa.

Visa holders are subject to normal Immigration control at the port of entry. They should therefore carry with them documents submitted with their applications, for possible presentation to Immigration officers.

The referred visa is one that requires special clearance or permission from the Director of Immigration Services in Dar es Salaam or the Principal Immigration Officer in Zanzibar.

Nationals and/or passport holders of the following countries require a Referred Visa:

Stateless individuals and other nationalities as may be specified from time to time by the authorities.

All applicants for a referred visa need to email us scanned copies of their visa application form and full passport details by email to the Consulate. Also required are the names, address and contact telephone numbers of their friends, relatives, business associates or Tour Operators in Tanzania. DO NOT post your passport and application form to us until we have confirmed to you that your Referred Visa has been authorised and we are ready to issue your visa. A referred visa usually takes 8 to 12 weeks for processing.

We cannot post date a visa.  Please ensure that you post your visa application 90 days before your date of entry in Tanzania. Business visas should be obtained at the border.
Multiple entry visas cannot be issued by this Consulate. However, those travellers who go to country members of the East Africa Community (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda or Burundi), a new visa will not be required to re-enter Tanzania as long as their current visa remains valid. Those who travel to countries other than Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda or Burundi will require a new visa to re-enter Tanzania.
If you are travelling on business purposes – please get your visa upon arrival in Tanzania. This Consulate cannot issue business visas.

A business visa is issued to prospective investors who intend to visit Tanzania for purposes such as making feasibility studies, establishing professional and business contacts, making arrangements for investments during the start-up period. This visa is issued on arrival at the port of entry on payment of US$200 with supportive papers for the purpose of the journey and/or supporting papers from the Tanzanian sponsors.

Residence Permits are not issued by this Consulate. Those who seek long term residence for any of the following or any other reasons will need to apply to the Director for Immigration Services at Immigration Headquarters in Dar es Salaam.

Residence Permits are issued to any of the following categories (or any other reasons as the case may be):

  • Diplomats for government projects
  • Investors, Consultants and Business people
  • Expatriates
  • Missionaries, Students and Volunteers
  • For work for no longer than 90 days.

The application should be submitted to the Director of Immigration Services at the Immigration Headquarters.

You must enter Tanzania within 90 days from the date of issue of the visa. You can stay in Tanzania for up to 90 days from the date of your entry into the country.


For Visa Applications from Australia we require:

  • A completed Visa Application Form per applicant (please download the application form above).
  • A valid passport with 6 months validity and 2 blank facing pages (Not a photocopy).
  • One passport size colour photo (Signature not required at the back of photo).
  • A travel itinerary showing date of entry into and departure from Tanzania. For Groups: one copy of itinerary for the entire group is sufficient People traveling for specific reasons other than tourism must submit a letter from their organization or office. These include but not limited to volunteers, people attending meetings & conferences, studies, diplomatic, official and any other business not mentioned here.
  • For the return of your passport(s): A self-addressed, Express Post or Platinum Post plastic satchel only.
  • Correct visa fee (A$95 per person or for USA nationals A$125 per person). Visa fees are payable by Australian Money Order, or Bank Cheque (made payable to “Consulate of the United Republic of Tanzania”). Credit cards or Personal cheques are not accepted. Travel Agent cheques are acceptable Payment of visa fees for a group of travellers can be made by one bank cheque or Money Order. Visa fees must be posted along with your visa application. 
  • Post your application to us in an Express Post or Platinum Post plastic satchel. Express Post/Platinum Post allows you to track the postage online on the Australia Post website. Do not forget to include a return, self-addressed, Express Post / Platinum Post satchel so that we can return your passports to you. If the passports are to be returned by courier please ensure that the courier brings a fully completed return Consignment Note and courier satchel. We do not print or fill-in the return Consignment Note.

  • A valid passport (Not a photocopy).

For Groups: one copy of itinerary for the entire group is sufficient People traveling for specific reasons other than tourism must submit a letter from their organization or office.   • For return of passports by Australia Post’s International Express Post please pay an extra A$75 for up to 4 passports. This service will return your passport to you within 5 working days. It is trackable and has signature on delivery.
  • Include two typed or clearly written, self-addressed adhesive labels with Applicant’s name, return address and daytime phone number. We do not address your return postage satchels. So to ensure efficient return of your passports, these labels are essential.
  • Correct visa fees (A$95 per person or for USA nationals A$125 per person). Visa fees are payable by bank draft to “Consulate of the United Republic of Tanzania”. Please note: ASB Bank Cheques, credit cards and personal cheques are not accepted Payment of visa fees for a group of travellers can be made by one bank draft.
  • Post your application to us by a New Zealand Post trackable delivery service. Do not forget to include: two self-addressed adhesive labels with the Applicant’s name, return address and daytime phone number; and also A$75 (for up to 4 passports) for return of passports by Australia Post’s International Express Post service which is trackable and has signature on delivery for return of your passports within 5 working days.

To ensure that we can issue a valid visa, it is therefore important to specify the correct date of entry on the application form and supply a current travel itinerary. One can apply for an extension of stay from the Immigration HQ in Dar es Salaam.

Other Services

Yellow Fever vaccination is only mandatory for those travellers who will enter Tanzania from a country that is infected with Yellow Fever. For these travellers you will need to produce an International Certificate of Vaccination upon entry.

For all other travellers, Yellow Fever vaccination is recommended but not mandatory.

If you are travelling in transit through Nairobi, Kenya (less than 12-hours stay), then Yellow Fever vaccination is not mandatory.

Travellers who cannot receive the yellow fever vaccination due to a medical reason, should obtain a medical exemption letter from a doctor. Please travel with the original copy of the letter and present it when asked at Tanzanian Immigration.

Additionally, travellers are advised to take prescribed anti-malaria tablets course a few days prior to arrival, during your stay, and for a short period after returning. Please consult your family doctor or the infections and vaccination centers in your country for more advice.

Documentary requirements are as follows:

  • A set of finger prints certified by local police authorities
  • A copy of your passport (all pages with full personal details)
  • Details of the place you last resided while in Tanzania showing name of district, name of town, street name (if available) and house number
  • Your current residential address and full contact details
  • Fee of US$25.

An Emergency Travel Document (ETD) will be issued for Tanzanians who are traveling for emergency reasons.
The ETD can enable them to travel only to Tanzania.
ETD could be issued due to the following reasons:

  • Loss of passport (Please attach a police report on the loss of passport)
  • Repatriation
  • Traveling to Tanzania to process a new passport
  • Traveling to Tanzania on an emergency while waiting for the processing of your passport application.

This Consulate can only certify a photocopy to be a “True Copy” of the original document. An administration fee of A$25 applies for this service.

We cannot authenticate documents that are issued in the United Republic of Tanzania, e.g. Police Clearance Certificate, Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, court documents or documents from any legal registry. You are advised to contact our Embassy in Tokyo who will need to verify the documents with the issuing authority in Tanzania. The contact details of our Embassy in Tokyo are on our Contact page.

A permit to work in Tanzania cannot be issued by an Embassy or Consulate. Travellers for work should apply for a Single Entry Permit from our Consulate for a duration of stay of upto 90 days. Thereafter, upon travel to Tanzania, they should visit Immigration Headquarters in Dar es Salaam and obtain a Work Permit. Expatriates who have obtained long term employment and require a Residence Permit should visit the following link on the Tanzanian Immigration Website: Residence Permit “Class B”.

Volunteers, Students, Religious Missionaries, people who are departing Tanzania (winding up affairs), people requiring medical treatment, etc. need to obtain a Residence Permit “Class C” from the Tanzanian Immigration Headquarters in Dar es Salaam. In the first instance, these travellers must obtain a Single Entry Entry Permit of upto 90 days duration from our Consulate in order to gain entry into Tanzania. Thereafter, you will need to visit Immigration Headquarters to get the relevant Residence Permit.
