Types of VISA

Ordinary/ Tourist Visa
This visa is issued at any Tanzanian Embassy / Consulate. It grants tourists / visitors the authorization to enter the country.

Business Visa
The business visa is issued to prospective investors who intend to visit Tanzania for such purposes as making feasibility studies, establishing professional and business contacts, and making arrangements for investments during the start-up period.

This type of visa is issued on arrival at the entry point on payment of US$100 with supportive papers for the purpose of the journey and/or supporting letters from the Tanzanian sponsors. This is besides obtaining an Entry Visa from any of the Tanzanian missions abroad.

Multiple-Entry Visa
Multiple entry visa are not issued, however, for a person who goes to county members of East Africa Community (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi), he/she will not need new visa to re-enter Tanzania as far as the visa is still valid. Those who go to countries other than Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, will need new visa at the entry point to Tanzania.

Visa fee for US & Irish nationals

Effective September 20, 2007 travel visa fees are A$125.00. The new fees will apply for single and all multiple entry visas.

Referred Visa
The referred visa is one that requires special clearance or permission from the Director of Immigration Services in Dar es Salaam or the Principal Immigration Officer in Zanzibar. People affected by this regulation may make enquiries at the nearest Tanzania missions abroad.

All applicants in the case of referred visa need to send scanned copies their their application form and full passport details by e-mail. Also names with address and Tel Nos. of their friends, relatives add business associates or Tour Operators in Tanzania.

Exemption of Visa
Currently the nationals of the under-mentioned countries do not need visa for travel to Tanzania:

Botswana, Gambia, Ghana, Hong Kong (special administrative Region of China), Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda , Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

NB: As the regulations are subject to change without prior notice, applicants are advised to check with the Consulate for the latest information.

Visa on Arrival
Visa on arrival may be granted to a person coming from a country which has no access to a Tanzanian Embassy or Consulate, however, there is no guarantee that visa on arrival will be issued.

New Zealand applicants can apply for visa at this Consulate in Melbourne.
All travellers are advised to obtain a visa prior to travelling to avoid risk and inconvenience upon arrival.

Visa applications cannot be processed until all the documents mentioned above have been submitted. Visitors should submit their applications 3 - 4 weeks before the intended travel date.

Certification for Immunization
Since Tanzania is in the list of yellow fever endemic zone, it is advisable to have a vaccination even when one is flying directly to Tanzania. In case one did not had time to have a vaccination before traveling, the service is provided at the airport free of charge.

How to apply for visa
Requirements / Guidelines for obtaining Visa for Tanzania

ALL APPLICANTS ARE ADVISED TO OBSERVE AND COMPLY WITH ALL VISA REGULATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS OUTLINED BELOW BEFORE SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION

Please download the application form from our website: www.tanzaniaconsul.org 

Fill in the application form (one for each person, child or infant) and send it to us with:

  • Valid Passport of the applicant
  • 2 recent photos per person to be attached to the application form (signature not required at the back of photos)
  • A copy of the travel itinerary (one copy will suffice if more than one person are traveling together)
  • Visa fee is A$95 per person (or per child/infant) for 30, 60 or 90 days, payable by Money Order, Bank cheque (payable to Consulate of Tanzania) or cash (you can pay by one bank cheque or MO for all travelers in a group). We do not accept payments by credit cards. Please fill in a separate application form for each accompanying child/infant.
  • The Consulate timings are: 10 am - 3 pm Mon - Fri; you can personally lodge visa applications during this time at the Consulate without an appointment
  • You can also send applications and documents by Courier, Express or Registered Post along with a return, self-addressed Express / Registered Post envelop to the address given below. We will mail the documents back to you. Please do not remove registered confirmation flap / bar code slip. It is advisable to secure an envelop with cellophane tape before posting.
  • It takes 5 working days to process a visa application. Also allow sufficient time for postage each way. For urgent visa requirements please call the Consulate for advice.
  • One can enter Tanzania within 90 days from the date of the issued visa, provided passport remains valid. A passport must have at least six months' validity before applying for visa.
  • Please provide your easily accessible telephone contact Nos. (Mob/Business/Res) and e-mail ID for easy access in case we need to contact you for any queries.
  • We do not issue multiple entry visa, however, for a person who goes to county members of the East Africa Community (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi), he/she will not need new visa to re-enter Tanzania as far as the visa is still valid. Those who go to countries other than Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, will need new visa at the entry point to Tanzania. However, you need to apply separately for visa for Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi if you wish to travel there.
  • Since Tanzania is in the list of yellow fever endemic zone, it is advisable to have a vaccination even when one is flying directly to Tanzania. In case one did not have time to get a vaccination before traveling, the service is provided at the airport free of charge.

IMP: Please do not send passport pouches, stubs of boarding passes, vaccination certificates or any unrelated materials. Send a copy of travel itinerary with arrival/departure and flight details only. Do not send a detailed tour programme to avoid waste of paper. You are advised to apply early for visa to avoid last minute delays or hassles. We also issue post-dated visas to suit one's date of entry into Tanzania.

Visa applicants from New Zealand are advised to pick up their documents by a courier or add A$15 (for up to two passports) to visa fees to enable us to return the documents by Australia Post International Registered Post envelope.

How to apply for a Police Clearance Certificate
The Consulate cannot issue a Police Clearance Certificate. Interested persons may write directly to:

The letter should state the reasons as to why the Police Clearance Certificate is required. Also please send an International Money Order for US$25 made payable to the Director of Criminal Investigations Deparment, a certified copy of the bio-data page from your passport and certified fingerprints from a local police station in your country of residence.
